šŸŽ™ļø Check out my new Marc Hoag AI Law Pod, a podcast ā€œhostedā€ by Google's NotebookLM. Now that NotebookLM allows customization, the AI ā€œhostsā€ actually interact with me, directly reference the newsletter itself, and deep dive quite a bit beyond the bounds of each issueā€™s content. If nothing else, itā€™s a very cool alternative way to enjoy Future Perfect while driving.

  • Adobe urges artists to embrace AI: Adobe executives state that artists who reject AI risk losing relevance in a rapidly evolving creative industry, as the company leans heavily into generative AI integration.

  • No non-AI alternatives planned: Adobe has no plans to develop products without AI capabilities, with leaders recommending that creators use the latest AI-enhanced tools to remain competitive.

  • Focused AI enhancements: Generative AI in Adobeā€™s suite is designed to handle specific tasks like removing distractions, freeing artists to focus on creative expression rather than repetitive tasks.

  • Balancing tradition with innovation: Adobe acknowledges the appeal of traditional art, with executives noting that handcrafted creations will still hold unique value even as demand for automated content grows.

  • Potential market shift: While Adobeā€™s commitment to AI may alienate some artists, the company believes the demand from AI adopters outweighs the potential loss of traditionalists, though competitors may fill that gap.

  • OpenAIā€™s new model, Orion, slated for December: OpenAI plans to launch Orion, its next-generation AI model, by December, promising significantly enhanced capabilities compared to GPT-4.

  • 100 times more powerful than GPT-4: Orion is expected to be 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, marking a significant leap in OpenAIā€™s AI technology and ambitions toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).

  • Exclusive access for partner companies: Unlike previous models available directly through ChatGPT, Orion will initially be available to partner companies, including Microsoft, allowing them to integrate Orionā€™s capabilities into their products.

  • Potential deployment on Azure: Engineers at Microsoft, OpenAIā€™s main deployment partner, are preparing to host Orion on Azure as early as November, although branding and final platform specifics remain under wraps.

  • Training foundation and celebration: Orionā€™s training reportedly involved using OpenAIā€™s ā€œo1ā€ model, with the team marking its completion with a celebratory event in September.

  • Hints from OpenAIā€™s leadership: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared a cryptic message on social media, sparking speculation that it hinted at Orion, as users anticipate further announcements.

  • Driving OpenAIā€™s AGI vision: Orion represents a key step in OpenAIā€™s quest to develop AGI, with the model anticipated to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve as OpenAI refocuses its mission as a profit-driven company.

  • Tentative release plan: Though OpenAI aims for a December rollout, the schedule is ambitious, and the timing may shift depending on final testing and partner readiness.

  • Best practices for authors using AI: The Authors Guild encourages writers to use AI as a supportive tool for brainstorming and editing, rather than a primary source for content creation, preserving the distinct human creativity that defines their work.

  • Ethical use of AI-generated content: Authors should rewrite any AI-generated text in their own voice, avoid mimicking other writersā€™ styles, fact-check AI output, and disclose AI-generated content if it significantly impacts the final work.

  • Disclosure to publishers: Writers must inform publishers if they include AI-generated text, plotlines, or characters, as contracts typically require content originality, and AI-generated elements are not copyright-protectable.

  • Transparency with readers: Authors are encouraged to disclose AI use to readers, especially when substantial portions of text or plot have been AI-generated, which can be done in introductions, acknowledgments, or bylines.

  • Amazon KDP requirements: Amazon requires authors to disclose any AI-generated content in books published through KDP, though AI used solely for editing or refining doesnā€™t need disclosure.

  • Fine-tuning AI on personal work: Authors fine-tuning AI models on their own previous work raise fewer ethical concerns, but should still disclose AI use due to the foundational models often being trained on unauthorized content.

  • Using AI for translation, cover art, or narration: Authors should prefer AI tools built on licensed content for cover art or translations and are encouraged to support human collaborators, given the professional impact of AI on creative fields like translation and voice acting.

  • Model clauses to protect against AI use: The Authors Guild provides model contract clauses to prevent publishers from using authorsā€™ work to train AI or generate translations, cover art, and narration without permission, offering authors greater control over AIā€™s use in the publication process.

āœØ PowerPromptā„¢

Ok this one is less of a written ā€œpromptā€ and more of a dialogue. If youā€™re doing a particular task and you need help, activate ChatGPTā€™s Advanced Voice mode, and place your phone next to you while youā€™re working on whatever youā€™re doing; any time you need help, just talk about it! Itā€™s pretty magical: Iā€™m not mechanically-inclined, but I just used Advanced Voice to help walk me through changing the injection plugs on my wifeā€™s beloved little VW Beetle. Hardly a challenging job, mechanically, but having never done it before, it was great to have my friendly AI assistant by my side.
