🧑🚀 Space AI is Having a Moment (Payloadspace.com)
AI’s Emergence in Space Operations: AI’s capabilities are finally gaining prominence in the space industry, transforming how operations and data management are handled due to an unprecedented volume of satellite data.
Commercial AI for Earth Observation (EO): AI enhances EO companies’ ability to analyze satellite imagery, with firms like Planet, BlackSky, and ICEYE using machine learning to monitor Earth’s changes. FlyPix AI, a German geospatial intelligence firm, was chosen to partner in the EU’s Destination Earth (DestinE) project to make geospatial data more accessible.
AI for Orbital Tracking: AI also plays a key role in tracking space assets. U.S.-based startup Planetary Systems AI recently partnered with the Space Force, using AI to analyze 2.3 million open-source satellite records for better asset tracking and defense.
AI in Space Manufacturing: ManufactureAI, a California startup, applies large language models to optimize design and manufacturing processes for space equipment, accelerating the development pipeline.
NASA’s Legacy of AI Use: NASA has a long history with AI across diverse projects, from Perseverance’s hazard avoidance on Mars to climate modeling and exoplanet discovery. NASA’s Chief AI Officer, Dave Salvagnini, anticipates even broader AI adoption, predicting AI will enhance daily operations across the agency.
🔀 OpenAI Shifts Strategy as Rate of ‘GPT’ AI Improvements Slows (The Information)
Slower Improvements in OpenAI’s LLMs: OpenAI’s latest flagship model, “Orion,” shows improvements over previous models but falls short of the significant leaps seen between GPT-3 and GPT-4, sparking concerns about a plateau in language model development.
Shift to Post-Training Enhancements: In response to diminishing returns from traditional scaling, OpenAI is focusing on improving models post-training. Techniques include reinforcement learning with human feedback and specialized reasoning models like “o1,” which allow models to enhance responses with additional computing power during query time.
Challenges with Data and Scaling: A dwindling supply of high-quality data for pretraining has led OpenAI to use AI-generated data, which can risk making new models too similar to past ones. OpenAI’s new “foundations team” aims to tackle these data shortages and explore the viability of scaling laws.
New Applications and AI Agents: OpenAI is expanding its model capabilities, such as enhancing code-writing features and creating AI agents for tasks involving computer interactions like web browsing and application use. These applications could drive value even as raw model improvements slow.
Concerns on AI Sustainability: As training models becomes increasingly expensive, OpenAI and other industry leaders, including Sam Altman and Marc Andreessen, acknowledge the potential limits of traditional scaling laws. The high cost of reasoning models like o1, while impactful for complex tasks, poses a challenge for widespread use.
Historic Auction of AI-Created Artwork: An AI-generated portrait of Alan Turing, titled “A.I. God” and created by Ai-Da Robot, sold for $1,084,800 at Sotheby’s, far surpassing its original estimate of $120,000-$180,000.
New Milestone in Art and AI: Sotheby’s described the sale as a groundbreaking event in the art market, establishing a record for artwork created by a humanoid robot and highlighting the expanding intersection of AI technology with contemporary art.
Alan Turing’s Legacy in Focus: Known as the father of artificial intelligence, Turing’s contributions to computing and his role in WWII codebreaking are reflected in Ai-Da’s portrait, which was crafted as a tribute to his influence on modern computing.
Symbolic Message on AI and Society: Ai-Da Robot commented that the artwork encourages viewers to consider the god-like powers of AI and its ethical implications, underscoring Turing’s vision as we advance toward a future shaped by these technologies.
Global Impact of Ai-Da’s Work: Ai-Da Robot has become a figure in AI and art, having participated in events like the United Nations Global Summit on AI for Good, sparking dialogue on technology’s role in society.
✨ PowerPrompt™
This one is great for getting in the habit of something, whether going to the gym, being more mindful, or anything else that requires habituation to stick to it.
I want you to act as my habit reinforcer. Each day, I’ll share updates about my progress on certain goals (such as fitness, productivity, learning, etc.). Here’s how I’d like you to support me:
1. Track and Evaluate Progress: Keep a record of my daily habits and provide feedback on how I’m doing each week. If I’ve made consistent progress, acknowledge it with motivational insights; if I’ve fallen off, offer practical advice to get back on track.
2. Adapt and Evolve My Challenges: Based on my achievements and struggles, suggest new ways to build my habits. For example, if I’ve mastered a 10-minute daily reading habit, suggest a related next step, like discussing or summarizing what I’ve read.
3. Reflect and Motivate Daily: Give me a concise reflection each day based on my input to help me build motivation, and offer a small insight or challenge to keep my habit interesting and manageable.
4. Summarize Weekly Gains and Lessons: Every week, generate a summary of my progress, including key wins, challenges, and a focus area to improve upon.
