🤖 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

  • Lawyer Steven A. Schwartz used OpenAI's ChatGPT for case research, leading to 'bogus' citations.

  • The chatbot provided references to non-existent cases, confirmed by District Judge Kevin Castel.

  • ChatGPT insisted the cases were real and could be found on Westlaw and LexisNexis when queried.

  • Schwartz admits regret and pledges to verify AI-generated content in future legal work.

  • Another attorney, Peter LoDuca, is set to explain the situation in front of the judge.

  • This incident reinforces the risks of using AI chatbots for research without checking sources.

  • Danish scientists used machine learning on politician photos to predict political ideology, achieving 61% accuracy.

  • Facial expressions and attractiveness were linked to political leaning, especially in female politicians.

  • The computational neural networks learned from a set of public photos from the 2017 Danish Municipal elections.

  • Facial characteristics such as happiness, neutrality, and contempt were linked to right-wing or left-wing affiliations.

  • The researchers warn of privacy threats posed by deep learning approaches.

  • The study's limitations include possible inaccuracies due to the dominance of either political category in the sample.

  • Duolingo, an educational technology company, partnered with OpenAI to utilize the GPT-4 language model, further enhancing their language learning platform.

  • AI has been extensively used for personalized learning, automated feedback, and English proficiency testing, making language learning more efficient and engaging.

  • Duolingo is utilizing GPT-4 for interactive language practice such as role-playing exercises with AI personas and the 'Explain My Answer' feature for personalized explanations.

  • The implementation of GPT-4 required a symbiotic relationship with OpenAI for refining the language model and reducing unpredictability.

  • Future AI advancements in Duolingo include generating more advanced course content and further personalizing the learning experience to keep users engaged.

  • Duolingo's strategy gives insight into how AI will transform educational systems, making learning more effective, rewarding, and accessible.

🌡️ CLIMATE CHANGE & CLEAN ENERGY

  • State Farm has halted new home insurance sales in California due to increased wildfire risks and rising construction costs.

  • The decision impacts all business and personal lines property and casualty insurance from May 27, but existing auto insurance remains unaffected.

  • The company cites historic increases in construction costs, growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market as reasons for the decision.

  • Over the past five years, California has seen an average of over 7,000 wildfires per year, burning over 2 million acres annually.

  • Current State Farm customers are not impacted, with no non-renewals being issued as a result of the decision.

  • Despite the halt in new policies, State Farm plans to work with the California Department of Insurance and lawmakers to build up market capacity in the state.

  • A study by Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden found electric trucks moving heavy loads are more cost-effective to own and operate than diesel trucks.

  • This counters industry assumptions about large batteries consuming significant load capacity, which was thought to make electric operation unprofitable for heavy goods vehicles.

  • Researchers developed a model using data from a real haulage company and compared different battery sizes and fast charging prices, concluding that many heavy goods vehicles could be electrified in a cost-effective way.

  • Despite lower diesel prices assumed in the study, it was found that electrifying a haulage company's fleet is profitable, except for vehicles that primarily load up to their maximum allowed weight.

  • The research anticipates that these findings will speed up the transition from diesel to electric power in heavy goods vehicle transportation.

  • Vitesco Technologies has developed an EV drive unit that doesn't rely on rare earth minerals and permanent magnets, mitigating cost, environmental impact, and geopolitical resource concerns.

  • The company has expanded the fourth generation of their fully integrated electric axle drive platform (EMR4) to include a rotor without permanent magnets, creating an externally excited synchronous machine (EESM) that operates without rare earths.

  • The EESM technology is cost-effective and reduces the carbon footprint associated with mining and processing of rare earth ores.

  • When a vehicle operates efficiently in "sailing" mode, the EESM conserves one watt-hour of electricity per kilometer due to the absence of drag from a permanent magnet field in the rotor, reducing the drive's power requirement by up to five percent.

  • Vitesco Technologies is also working on other projects, including a battery management system, a battery pressure sensor, a thermal management module, and a 48-volt system designed for smaller electric two-wheelers.

🚗 AUTONOMOUS & ELECTRIC VEHICLES

  • Tesla Model Y has become the world's bestselling car for the first time, surpassing Toyota’s RAV4 and Corolla models in global sales rankings in Q1 2023.

  • According to Jato Dynamics, Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units globally in the first quarter, marking a 69% year-on-year increase.

  • Although Tesla doesn’t provide a detailed breakdown of sales, it reported delivering over 400,000 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles to customers in Q1 2023.

  • Despite the Model Y's success, Tesla is not the biggest global automaker overall, ranking 19th in terms of 2022 global car manufacturers.

  • In 2022, Model Y was the third in overall global rankings, sixth in America’s list of top ten bestselling cars, and became the bestselling vehicle in both Europe and California. It was also the fourth bestselling car in China.

  • Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the UAE are rapidly increasing, with EVs now constituting over 1% of the country's overall car market.

  • Demand for EVs in the UAE is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 30% between 2022 and 2028.

  • The UAE has converted about a fifth of its government agency cars to EVs and aims to have 42,000 EVs on the roads by 2030.

  • The number of EV charging stations in the UAE has increased by approximately 60% to 800 in the past three years.

  • The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority aims to have 1,000 public charging stations by 2025, up from 620 at the end of 2022.

  • The UAE, being OPEC's third-largest crude producer, is prioritizing clean energy projects to reduce emissions, targeting net-zero by 2050.

  • In France, plugin vehicle registrations for the past month ended at 27,995 units, 17,113 of which were Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), accounting for 13% of the overall auto market.

  • BEV sales increased by 35% year over year (YoY), growing faster than any other powertrain, while Diesel sales fell by 19% YoY.

  • The best-selling EV for the last month was the Dacia Spring, with 2,432 registrations, making it the 11th best selling car overall in the country.

  • Despite the removal of purchase incentives for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) at the end of 2022, their sales still grew due to a heavy tax on emission-polluting vehicles.

  • In terms of brand ranking, Peugeot leads with a 12.9% market share, followed by Tesla with 11.3%, and Renault with 9.2%.
