🤖 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

  • Microsoft has introduced Bing's voice mode to Edge on desktop, allowing users to ask Bing's chatbot questions using their voice.

  • The feature, already available on mobile, can be activated by selecting the microphone button on Bing’s chat box.

  • The chatbot currently supports English, Japanese, French, German, and Mandarin, with plans for additional languages.

  • This development comes as Microsoft plans to discontinue Cortana, its voice-activated assistant, on Windows later this year.

  • Microsoft is encouraging users to use Bing and its new AI-powered feature, Copilot, which will be built into Windows 11, as replacements for Cortana.

  • Windows Copilot, when released, will be available directly from the taskbar for tasks such as asking questions, summarizing content, adjusting PC settings, and more.

  • Google Cloud is partnering with Mayo Clinic to expand the use of generative AI in healthcare, facilitating quick retrieval of patient information.

  • Mayo Clinic is testing a new service called Enterprise Search on Generative AI App Builder, which allows users to create their own chatbots to search through vast amounts of internal data.

  • The tool can help healthcare workers quickly interpret data such as a patient's medical history, imaging records, and lab results, even when stored across different formats and locations.

  • Mayo Clinic's CTO, Vish Anantraman, noted the system can help reduce physician burnout by streamlining administrative tasks and saving time.

  • The application of generative AI in healthcare must be approached with caution due to the risks of incorrect outputs or fabricated information, necessitating a "safety over speed" approach, as highlighted by Aashima Gupta, Google Cloud's global director of health care strategy and solutions.

  • This partnership aligns with an expanded agreement between Google Cloud and Mayo Clinic, formed in 2019, to collaborate on AI applications in healthcare.

🌡️ CLIMATE CHANGE & CLEAN ENERGY

  • MIT engineers are developing a 1-megawatt electric motor for potential use in larger, heavier aircraft, a critical step towards reducing aviation's carbon footprint.

  • The motor, the size of a checked suitcase and lighter than an adult, will convert electrical energy from a battery or fuel cell into mechanical work to power propellers.

  • The team demonstrated through computations and testing of individual components that the integrated system can generate one megawatt of power.

  • The motor can be used in hybrid propulsion systems, functioning alongside traditional turbofan jet engines during certain flight phases.

  • MIT's electric motor design could eventually be scaled up to multi-megawatt motors for larger passenger planes.

  • The project will be presented at the Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium (EATS) and is sponsored by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

  • Clean tech accelerator OceansLab plans to demonstrate hydrogen fuel cells in high-profile yacht races, aiming to decarbonize the maritime industry.

  • The 60-foot yacht adheres to the sustainability-focused standards set by the International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA).

  • The yacht will be the first to integrate a hydrogen-electric energy system, capable of powering all onboard energy and propulsion outside races.

  • The fuel cell system developed by OceansLab's spinoff, Genevos, is a modular, scalable solution for a range of vessels.

  • The project also incorporates solar power via a partnership with Oceanvolt and Maxeon Solar Technologies, providing over 3.6kW of power from the solar cells installed on the yacht's deck.

  • OceansLab has integrated green hydrogen into its plans through a partnership with the government of Jersey, indicating a sustainable source for the hydrogen needed in their fuel cells.

  • California-based In-N-Out Burger and Meta Platforms are opposing SB 253, the "Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act," in the state legislature.

  • The bill would mandate companies with annual revenues over $1 billion operating in California to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, including indirect emissions from production and consumption.

  • Both companies have hired lobbying firms to fight against the bill, with In-N-Out spending $90,000 and Meta $48,000.

  • Opposition to SB 253 also comes from state Chambers of Commerce and several farming, water, and agriculture associations, citing concerns for small and medium businesses.

  • State Senator Scott Wiener, the bill's lead author, argues that such disclosures pose no cost to small businesses and are crucial for meeting climate goals.

  • After passing the state Senate 24-9, the bill is now set to go to the Assembly for voting.

🚗 AUTONOMOUS & ELECTRIC VEHICLES

  • Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 Tractor, an electric semi truck, recently completed a 3000 km journey from Germany to Turkey.

  • The truck is currently being produced in the Mercedes-Benz Wörth factory and used public EV charging stations during the journey.

  • The eActros 300 Tractor is equipped with three battery packs each with a capacity of 112 kWh, providing a range of up to 220 km per charge and requires just over an hour to charge from 20% to 80%.

  • While the vehicle's range may not be suitable for long hauls, it's ideal for medium-distance trips and can save operators money through cheaper operation and maintenance.

  • Mercedes-Benz also offers older eActros models with longer range capabilities. For example, the eActros 400 with four battery packs can travel up to 400 kilometers on a single charge.

  • Mercedes-Benz is the first company approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to sell or lease vehicles with an automated driving system.

  • The company's Drive Pilot, a Level 3 system, allows the car to do all the driving while the driver stands by to take control when needed.

  • Drivers using Drive Pilot can remove their hands from the steering wheel and feet from pedals, but must keep their face visible to in-car cameras.

  • The system will be available as an option for 2024 Mercedes-Benz S- Class and EQS Sedan models, with first deliveries in late 2023.

  • Drive Pilot will operate up to 40 mph on certain freeway sections and in high traffic density. However, it is not designed for operation on city or county streets, construction zones, or during heavy rain or fog.

  • The system uses cameras, radar, lidar sensors, and microphones to navigate, but Mercedes warns of the risk of driver complacency during the hand-off between the system and the driver.

  • A Cruise self-driving car was recorded on video blocking a police officer from accessing a crime scene.

  • The officer can be heard in the video saying they need to move the car due to it obstructing emergency medical and fire services.

  • According to Cruise's statement, their car initially stopped at an emergency scene, then performed a U-turn and pulled over, allowing other vehicles to proceed around it.

  • The incident occurred during a shooting which resulted in nine people getting injured.
