🌡 CLIMATE CHANGE
The World Weather Attribution (WWA) just released the study which also determined that rainfall in 2022 in the Lake Chad and Niger Basins was some 20% more wet than baseline, caused directly by climate change.
Climate change will make El Niño and La Niña stronger by 2030 — 40 years sooner than previously thought (long read)
Oscillating shifts between warmer air and colder oceans around especially in the eastern tropical Pacific will strengthen significantly in the next eight years severely threatening the local populations or fauna and flora on and around the Galápagos Islands.

Earth can regulate its own temperature, naturally “cancelling out” global warming — but likely not soon enough (quick read)
Researchers at M.I.T. have determined that the Earth’s own stabilizing feedback mechanisms — so-called “silicate weathering” in which CO2 is drawn out of the atmosphere and into ocean sediments eventually trapping the CO2 in rocks — will probably work, but on a timescale of several hundred thousand years.
🔋 CLEAN ENERGY
Why Amazon is going all in on renewables — and how it intends to use clean energy by 2025 (long read)
This is a press release from Amazon’s VP of public policy. Key takeaways include Amazon’s investments in 199 clean energy projects in the US which, once fully operational, will produce some 32.7 GWh of renewable energy per year, enough for about 3 million US homes; and that Amazon will be on 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of its original goal.
Under the agreement, Vale will provide up to 25,000 metric tons of nickel to GM for use in its Ultium battery cathodes, enough to manufacture some 350,000 EVs per year.
Biden-Harris Administration announces major investment to preserve America’s clean nuclear energy infrastructure (quick read)
This is a press release detailing the $6 billion Civil Nuclear Credit (CNC) program, funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to keep existing nuclear reactors online in order to achieve 100% clean power by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050. The first round of the funds will go to southern California’s Diablo Canyon Power Plant.

🚗 AUTONOMOUS & ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Baidu, Pony.ai given green light to test self-driving cars with no one in front row in Beijing (quick read)
The concern stems from AVs’ enormous data collection while driving on American roads, whether that data could be used for nefarious purposes by Chinese state actors, and the absence of any proper oversight at present.
While German auto manufacturers are transitioning well enough to the hardware portion of EVs, it’s the software side of the package that is proving most difficult, especially for autonomous EVs, hence VW’s new software platform Carion, and its just-shuttered partnership with Ford, Argo.ai.
