⚠️ If today’s email looks a little different to you, it’s because I’m testing a new platform for the newsletter. I will see how it goes and expect to make a final decision by Monday’s issue.

🌡 CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change negotiators in Egypt say they remain far from a deal (long read)

With COP27 coming to an end, a stalemate looms over an inability to find common ground between rich and poor countries on how best to tackle change, and crucially, whether to provide a fund to help the latter pay for climate change-induced damages caused primarily by the richer countries.

Plants use their epigenetic memories to adapt to climate change (long read)

This is a summary of an academic journal summarizing a new paper on plants’ ability to adapt to rapidly changing climate conditions just as animals have been known to do.

Governments should prioritize climate change despite economic concerns, poll finds (quick read)

A majority of respondents — some 60% — from France, Italy, and Spain have said that climate change mitigation must take priority regardless the economic costs involved.

🔋 CLEAN ENERGY

Clean-tech startup Quino Energy launches to create grid-scale battery infrastructure for greater use of wind and solar power (long read)

Harvard researchers have developed a redox-flow battery that uses an aqueous, organic electrolyte to provide an economically viable solution for providing long-term storage of wind and solar power. This new technology has been licensed exclusively to startup Quino Energy.

Enel is going to build one of the largest solar panel and cell factories in the US (quick read)

Only four solar manufacturing facilities in the US can output over 1 GW of solar components per year. Enel North America, in collaboration with 3Sun USA, will soon produce up to 3 GW of high-performance bifacial photovoltaic modules and cells annually, and eventually ramp up to 6 GW.

3 things to know about the state of clean energy tech (quick read)

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released its annual World Energy Outlook report highlighting three key takeaways about clean energy technology generally: there must be a diversification of supply chains; contrary to popular critique, net-zero goals don’t necessarily drive up prices; and — obviously — the world needs a lot more clean energy, not least of which, since 214 million new EVs are expected within just seven years.

🚗 AUTONOMOUS & ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Lyft & Motional to launch driverless ride-hail service in Los Angeles (quick read)

Motional, an AV company founded between Hyundai and Aptiv, in partnership with Lyft, will launch a fully driverless taxi service in LA using Hyundai IONIQ 5 EVs, following their previous deployment in Las Vegas.

GM expects EV profits to be comparable to gas vehicles by 2025, years ahead of schedule (long read)

Largely due to a decrease in GM’s costs to produce its new Ultium batteries which will dip to $87/kWh in 2025 and $70/kWh later in the decade, profit parity of EVs and ICE vehicles is finally within grasp.

Waymo teams with China’s Zeekr EV brand for autonomous cars (quick read)

Zeekr, a premium electric brand of Chinese carmaker Geely, has partnered with Waymo to produce its next generation driverless minivans entirely devoid of human driving controls. Previously, Waymo was using the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and Jaguar I-PACE crossover SUV.

🎉 THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY!

Thank you so much for reading, have a great weekend, see you next week!
